Summer Fun

The Boardwalk on Indiana Beach ~ Lake Shafer ~ Monticello, IN

I've been so bogged down with editing and revising the novel that I'm going to query in a week or two. I'm finally nearing the end of the book...then I have to get the query letter right. I planned on querying this week, but the process is taking longer (doesn't it always?) than I thought it would. I hope to be done with the book and query by the end of next week. ANYWAY ~ that's where I'm at. Eric and I are also writing the query letter for another Civil War article we've written. We plan to query that next week too. Soooo, with all this editing, revising, and query stuff going on, I thought that this week my blog would be just about summer fun. I know we are all busy doing summery stuff.

My questions for you have to do with SUMMER FUN.

What song or songs make you think of summer?

What movies do you like to watch during the summer?

What is your favorite summer memory?

My answers are :

Songs ~ I have 4 older sibs, so I was exposed to all sorts of music when I was small. When I was real young, I can remember a hot summer at the lake when we heard (over and over) and sang ~ Joy to the World...all the boys and girls now...Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea...Joy to you and me...by Three Dog Night. The song Rocketman by Elton John also stirs up some summer memories up at the island in Minnesota. My brother played Rocketman over and over. We caught frogs, swam, fished, and jumped on a trampoline. Great memories.

Movies ~ I always watch, To Kill A Mockingbird, at least once a summer. To me, it's the ultimate summer movie. Eric and I watch the movie, Gettysburg, over the 4th of July holiday. I also love to watch old westerns and old scary movies. During the summers when I was young, I used to watch those oldies with my dad and brothers. We stayed up late and ate popcorn and apples.

Favorite Summer Memory ~ In recent years, (about every other year) there have been destination weddings in our families. We've had some real great family times in Aspen, Colorado, Brussels, Belgium, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Marblehead, Ohio. No weddings this year, but my nephew is getting married next June in North Carolina. I love when the entire family gets together. It's summer. It's a whirlwind, fun-filled, pizza-eating, karaoke, wrench-your-knee-while-dancing type weekend...and that's all before the nuptials and reception. Each wedding weekend has priceless summer memories of its own.

I also loved going to Indiana Beach on Lake Shafer when the kids were small. We had some great times there, spending a long weekend at Harbor Inn and playing at the waterpark. Crazy raccoons always tried to steal our burgers, hotdogs, and jalapeño poppers from the grill.

Have an awesome summer week and write on!

While Harry Potter doesn't remind me of summer, it is THE movie that I am most anxious to see this summer. It comes out in one week!

Also, it's great that you are putting so much time and thought into your query letter before you send it out to agents. Best of luck to you with querying!

Rachel: Welcome and thanks for commenting! I can't WAIT for Harry Potter!

I visited your blog. It's a great blog for writers. Very informative.

Have a great week.

I never do the query routine anymore. I used to in the days of snail mail. Now I sometimes invite editors to have a look at a link on the Internet. It works for me. I sell stuff to magazines like that all the time.

Honest Abe: Interesting. I am going mention my blog on one of the queries. Thanks for the tip.
Love your bird pictures!

How fun. I am glad you are enjoying some summer activities between what sounds like a lot of hard work. I like chick flicks but I pretty much go to the movies whenever I find the chance as they don't come that often. Last one I liked was "The King's Speech" not exactly summer though.

My favorite summer memory came from my childhood in Beijing, it's about catching dragonflies!

Shopgirl: I like chick flicks too. Eric only watches them with me if some sort of bartering is involved. I usually have to watch some action movie with him in return.

I know - that you know - that I loved to catch dragonflies when I was little too...great summer memories.

Have a great week!

These are my summer inspirations.

Songs: Any and all Beach Boys Songs, School's Out for Summer, and Summertime from Porgy and Bess.

Movies: Pride and Prejudice - the long BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, along with all the romantic comedies that the Hallmark Channel shows during the summer.

Memory: Growing up, we always took a 3-week road trip during the summers. Can't do that anymore, but I love traveling with the Texas Bible Bowlers to their National Competition each summer. So many memories!

Marji:I love that version of Pride and Prejudice! Colin Firth is soooo MR. DARCY.

I just recently read P & P for the first time. The original writing is so interesting.

Thanks for sharing your favorites!

Damyanti: Welcome here. Thanks for your comments and you have a awesome summer too.
I'm getting nervous about querying again. I'm working on the query letter and a last read through of the book. I'm not going to rush...but I plan to have the first query out sometime before the end of the month.
Thanks again for stopping in.

Oh, you've been busy, busy, busy! Good luck with the editing and the querying.

My favorite summer memories all have to do with water skiing and camping with the family. I love every minute of it!

Julie: Thanks for commenting. I love water skiing. It's been years since I've gone. We used to go out on Lake Michigan.
