LIVING HISTORY AND OTHER THINGS...

Hardtack, salt pork, and boiled beans - a Civil War soldier's Thanksgiving in the field.
Remember to give thanks for our American soldiers (and our allies) in service this Thanksgiving.

It's never easy to be away from home for these brave men and women, especially during the holidays.

Yesterday, Eric and I did a living history with one of our Civil War re-enacting groups.

A living history is an event designed to show how people lived during a certain time period. It can also be thought of as an open air museum with live exhibits and activities.

We dressed up in our Civil War gear and became part of an early American timeline. Native Americans mingled with early explorers, Frenchmen of the LaSalle expedition, and pioneers. The Revolutionary War soldiers were all present – Colonials, British, and French. There were also soldiers from the War of 1812, and the Civil War. These were all groups that figured prominently in the history of the Great Lakes region.

Living History’s are a great way to teach and show life back in the day. If you ever get a chance to go to one of these “Settler Days” - I highly recommend. As a history buff, I love chatting with the people who re-enact from all different eras, as well as the spectators who come to learn. It was a good time. There's nothing like sitting around a roaring campfire while you talk a little history.

I’ve been on a winning streak the last month.

Last week, I had won Erica Vetsch’s book, A Bride’s Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas, from a give away on Sarah Forgrave’s blog. This week I won a vintage apron from another giveaway on Sarah Sundin’s blog. Her book, Blue Skies Tomorrow, is on my TBR list - after I finish reading, Deep Cover, by Sandra Orchard, and Lynda Schab’s, Mind Over Madi.

So much to read. So much to write. So little time.

I’ve also added two more blog awards to my collection. I want to personally thank two, lovely and talented writers, Brandi Boddie, and Stacy Henrie, for these awards. Please take the links and check out their blogs. These wonderful women always have something good going on.

I’m looking forward to the holiday.

I have been truly blessed with a wonderful family, good friends, a loving hubby, and awesome kids. I’m looking forward to spending the long weekend with them.

I want to end this post by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. As I go into my ninth month of blogging, I give thanks for all of you who I have connected with through blogging, tweeting, or face book. As I slowly build my own platform, I am so thankful that you are a part of it, whether you just read a post, leave a comment, or mention me in a tweet. You’re all awesome! Happy Thanksgiving!

What plans do you have for Thanksgiving? Are you cooking? What's your favorite part of the meal?

Between you, me and the gatepost,

Loree

Happy Thanksgiving to you too! I personally love stuffing. I wish I had more time too. Or that I'd be wiser with what I do have. Heh.

I think you'll enjoy Mind Over Madi! I haven't read Sandra's book. I'll have to put it on my TBR pile.

I think your outdoor museum sounded interesting. I've been to some places in KY where they dress the part and make soap and food from pioneer days and I've always enjoyed it. :)

Congrats on your awards and fun prizes. I love it when win stuff like that. It's always a pleasant surprise!

I am cooking at my house for the first time ever and looking forward to it! Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, Loree, and congratulations on 9 months of blogging! When my kids were younger we'd participate in a pioneer school day where we'd dress the part and attend a one room school house. Always lots of fun.

So nice you and hubby got a chance to dress in your Civil War clothing for the Living History event. Did you take pics?

This Thanksgiving, I don't have to do the cooking! Yeah! I'm visiting with a friend and her family this year, but I will make a pumpkin pie to take over.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ooh, that sounds like fun! I'd love to see a history reenactment someday!

This year me and my family are spending Thanksgiving with our adopted Texas mom. We've had Thanksgiving with her before, and its always fun. I think my favorite part is the pumpkin pie and banana pudding, lol! I always go for the sweet stuff, but I do like turkey and stuffing too ;-)

Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Loree!

Happy Thanksgiving! I'd love to take part in or see a living history reenactment. Love love love history. Particularly U.S. history, for some reason I can't explain.

:-)

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Loree! I'm thankful I won't be doing the cooking this year, lol. (I'm contributing a veggie tray to the spread.) :)

That hardtack looks, well... hard. Blecch!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too. I like the turkey best, both white and dark meat, with cranberry sauce on each forkful. Mmmmmmm.

God's best,
Jen

The living history sounds like so much fun! I know they do cattle round-ups in Ft. Worth every year. Will have to see what other groups might be out there.

and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your as well Loree. I hope to do a little better on that day than the salt port you showed. My reading of a soldiers life in The First MN. Volunteers left me with the distinct impression that it was really gross stuffy and often was fill out with stuff I wouldn't even want to think about... :)

Marji:I love the living history. I learn so much from them. The one we did Sunday had different time periods. It was fun going from one to the next, sharing a fire and a chat with fellow history buffs and reenactors.

trout: The CW soldiers did eat some pretty raunchy stuff. I hope you and Mrs. T have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Marji and trout, thanks so much for popping in. Happy Thanksgiving to you both.

Oh Loree, I would love to see more pictures of the reenactment! I adore that stuff. My husband and I have always been involved with the highland games (with a name like Campbell, I think it's required) but we've wanted to get involved in renaissance, steampunk and civil war groups as well.

Happy Thanksgiving

I would love to see a living history event! Sounds like lots of neat stuff going on - have a Happy Thanksgiving, Loree.

Candie: Usually you can find local groups who reenact, or look online to find local "fests" to attend. This is where you meet people, and can seek out groups.

Stacy: A Living History is a little different than a full reenactment. It's usually camp life or civilian life of the era. Reenactments usually have a battle scenario with many reenactors.

Candie and Stacy, thank you both for stopping in and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Ouch, that hardtack is tough on the teeth! Great you participated in a Living History, though. An excellent way to give thanks. ;)
